It's 2010, the last album Kidneythieves released was in 2002, Free Dominguez and Bruce Somers went their separate ways after Zerospace (2002). In 2008 there were rumours of Kidneythieves reunion, the rumours spread far and wide, the anticipation and excitement of fans was growing. Finally, in 2010, Kidneythieves released their third album, Trypt0fanatic. And it's like that eight years of seperation never happened.
Trypt0fanatic
"Jude (Be Somebody)", the first track on Trypt0fanatic, reminds fans why Kidneythieves were such a musical force to be reckoned with back in the days of Trickster and Zerospace. Kidneythieves hold nothing back on this album. Fans wanted a return and they give them everything they wanted and more.
The two opening tracks, "Jude (Be Somebody)" and "Beg" are Kidneythieves doing what they do best. Metal laced with industrial riffs, and Free's sultry and sexy voice with her passionate screams. "Freeky People" delves into a slightly more dance/industrial sound, with a very catchy chorus. Still very much a Kidneythieves track that pushes past the norm of metal and industrial music. But slightly more upbeat than the other tracks on Trypt0fanatic.
Trypt0fanatic just continues to get better with each track. Everything people would expect from Kidneythieves, and more, is in this album. Even from one listen, it is clear just how much work went into the making of this album. "Size of Always" has strong industrial sounds, with strong guitar work and "Lick U Clean" experiments with a dirty industrial sound that mixes with grunge beats, that suit the lyrics and theme of the song perfectly.
Kidneythieves are known for their unique brand of metal/industrial, but they also have a great ability to take the listener places, and paint a landscape in their mind with sounds that hypnotize and the bewitching voice of Free. "Comets + Violins", "Velveteen" and "Dead Girl Walking" are great examples of the aural world Kidneythieves creates. The trance like music and the pummeling beats that pull us in, combined with the sweet, yet unyielding voice of Free, brings the listener into Kidneythieves' world, and makes us apart of the music.
This is a great comeback album for Kidneythieves. From beginning to end, it hooks you in and doesn't let go. The album ends with "Tears on A Page", a beautiful, yet depressing song; a ballad style track to finish off the album. A softer song compared to the rest of the album, to bring the listener back from the overall mind bend experienced from the previous nine tracks.
Trypt0fanatic really is a great album, and it is clear that Free and Bruce went into this project aiming to give it their all, and they did just that. An amazing way to let everyone know they're back. Let's just hope there won't be another eight-year hiatus before the next release.
